Why Massage Therapy

Modern studies have shown that massage can treat a range of physical, mental and emotional disorders including back pain, high blood pressure, and stress and anxiety. Being the largest organ of the human body, the skin is enriched with nerve endings. When the skin is massaged it soothes the soft tissue and encourages the muscles and surrounding skin to soften and relax.

Modalities that can be eased or healed by massage include:

  • anxiety, stress and depression

  • insomnia

  • high blood pressure

  • back pain

  • headache

  • chronic aches and pains

  • arthritis

  • sports injuries

There are various types of massage that assist the body and mind in specific areas, but they are all inter-related and they include:

  • sports massage

  • therapeutic massage

  • remedial and relaxation massage

  • trigger point therapy

  • tendon release

  • massage during pregnancy

The benefits of massage are usually immediate for the client. They will feel a deep relaxation and a sense of calm, a stillness of the mind, and more ease and comfort in the body.

Massage encourages the release of happy chemicals known as endorphins and these produce feelings of wellbeing in the person who has just received a massage.

Immediate benefits of massage are:

  • improved circulation and skin tone

  • reduced muscle tension

  • stimulation of the lymphatic system

  • reduction of stress hormones

  • heightened mental alertness

Long term benefits of massage include:

  • faster healing of soft tissue injuries

  • reduced anxiety and depression

  • increased flexibility and joint mobility
